Here, we show that exposure to the 3D-printed fearful chamber increases freezing behaviors compared to the animals' freezing levels in the safe chamber, while reducing freezing behaviors compared to the freezing levels in the safe chamber for the animals exposed to the 3D-printed safe chamber. This result indicates that the effects of the 3D-printed fear-conditioning chambers are similar to the effects of the standard, physical chambers on the animals' freezing levels. Importantly, exposure to the 3D-printed fear-conditioning chamber was found to increase the animals' freezing levels in the standard chambers when compared to the freezing levels of the animals that were exposed to the 3D-printed safe chamber. This result indicates that the animals were not initially prepared to freeze, suggesting that the 3D-printed chambers were not sufficiently frightening. Although these results were expected, they were obtained in a single session, which means that we were not able to confirm that the animals were unable to decrease freezing behaviors when in the 3D-printed safe chamber, because the effects of this chamber on the animals' freezing level disappeared after repeated exposures. In future studies, it would be interesting to compare the effects of the 3D-printed fear-conditioning chambers with those of other types of chambers, such as virtual reality chambers, on the animals' freezing levels. Moreover, in future studies, it would be interesting to further examine the potential of using 3D-printed chambers as a potential exposure therapy, and to compare 3D-printed chambers to virtual reality chambers. Additionally, in the current study, we did not examine the effects of 3D-printed chambers on cognitive biases or other negative affective states that are often present in PTSD-related phobias. Future studies could aim to determine how 3D-printed chambers affect these symptoms. Taken together, the results of the current study indicate that exposure to 3D-printed fear-conditioning chambers have considerable clinical potential, and may be of benefit to individuals with PTSD-related fears.
